Sunglasses are not just stylish, but an important way to protect your eyes from the sunlight. Even on cloudy and overcast days, it is good to wear them outdoors so you don't damage your eyes. However, it isn't always easy to find the right pair. Here are some tips to help get you started on your search.

Get a Routine Eye Exam

Before you start shopping around for sunglasses, it is a good idea to visit the eye doctor. Even if you don't currently wear eyeglasses or contacts, you may be in need of them now. You don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on a pair of sunglasses, only to find out you need prescription sunglasses. Since eye exams are good to have on a regular basis anyway, now is the perfect time to have it done. The eye doctor will let you know if you need corrective eyewear, so that you not only get glasses, but prescription sunglasses as well.

Make Sure They Are the Right Fit

While the look of sunglasses will likely be one of the things you look for, they also need to fit well. Your bone structure and size of your face can make a big difference in how a certain style or size of sunglasses fit you. If you already know which style fit best on your face, shopping online might be possible, but it is often better to try on glasses in person first. Pay attention to how comfortable they are, making sure they aren't too snug. You also want to be sure they aren't too far away from your eyes as you need protection from the UV rays.

Choose the Right Frames For Your Face Shape

For the style and shape of the frames, you want to take your face shape into consideration. The shape of the frames should be different than the shape of your face. So if you have a round face, don't go for round frames. Instead, choose oval or oblong frames. The frames also need to be in scale with your face. While you might like oversized aviator sunglasses, they don't work for everyone. If you are petite and have slight facial features with a smaller face in general, these probably aren't the right choice.

Consider Polarized Lenses

Some sunglasses have special features that you might want to consider, such as polarized lenses. With these types of lenses, you don't have as much of a glare when you are in certain situations. They are great at reducing glare when you are outside and in or near the water, such as at the beach, the lake, or in the swimming pool. They also reduce glare from direct sunlight and when you are out in the snow. You will see perfect through the lenses, possibly even having better eyesight than without the special lenses. However, you won't be able to use devices outdoors with these glasses on, as it makes it harder to see.
